This is one of my favorite children's books, and I have MANY. It is so lyrical it feels like a timeless fairy tale and reads like a song. My copy has a CD recording of the author herself reading it, and it is a joy to listen to. The story is fresh, unpredictable, and so satisfying in the end, and teaches an important lesson without being heavy-handed. The illustrations are vibrant and engaging and really bring the story to life.

A book for all to read disguised as a children's book. Everyone should read this book about seeing the beauty within. Beautifully stated.

Kathleen Pelley’s story echoes the old fairy tales in its style, and its gentle moral is especially timely in our own, often frightening world.

- Mary Ann Hoberman, Children’s Poet Laureate

An original Scottish fable about the power of kindness and finding the “king” in one another.

Almost twenty years since its first release, and now in its third printing, this Scottish fable about the power of kindness continues to be a perennial favorite of children, parents, and teachers.
