When I found out my friend, Sister Mary Ann, was headed off to Uganda for three months where she would be working at a women’s clinic and a school, I just had to help her load her suitcase with… books for the children.

Great fun choosing lots of African tales that I used to read at Loyola School for so many years.  Here’s what she set off with:

The Anansi books featuring a trickster spider–always good for a chuckle!

Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock
Anansi and the Magic Stick
Anansi Goes Fishing

A lovely African twist on a classic fairy tale! A story about the beginning of stories! Classic Caldecott!

These would all be wonderful stories to share as part of this month’s Black History celebrations.

The Twelve Dancing Princesses
A Story, A Story
Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People

And here are all the wonderful children from Gulu where Sister Mary Ann is working. Happy faces!
